Check-In Post - January 8th 2025

Hello to all members, passers-by, curious onlookers, and shy lurkers, and welcome to our regular daily check-in post. Just leave a comment below to let us know how your current projects are progressing, or even if they're not.

Checking in is NOT compulsory, check in as often or as seldom as you want, this community isn't about pressure it's about encouragement, motivation, and support. Crafting is meant to be fun, and what's more fun than sharing achievements and seeing the wonderful things everyone else is creating?

There may also occasionally be questions, but again you don't have to answer them, they're just a way of getting to know each other a bit better.

This Week's Question: If you're making any, what are your crafting resolutions for 2025?

If anyone has any questions of their own about the community, or suggestions for tags, questions to be asked on the check-in posts, or if anyone is interested in playing check-in host for a week here on the community, which would entail putting up the daily check-in posts and responding to comments, go to the Questions & Suggestions post and leave a comment.

I now declare this Check-In OPEN!

You can always use it later if it won't work for your yarn.

I've finished the T-shirt and started putting together the trousers, which required another round of cross-grain seaming, which is tedious and boring, so I'm glad it's done. I'll try to solve the neck problem tomorrow, by adding another piece of felt, so that the neck will be longer and the oversized head look less disproportional. Once that's done, I can attack the feet/boots, which promises to be another complicated task. If I ever make another rag doll (after these two) I'll make a better pattern first.

I've finished the Diamond Art Cards - just in time for another two projects to arrive in the post (steer me clear of buying things online!). I'll try to get a few photos up tomorrow.

I went shopping online earlier this year to get the wool for the second dolphin tapestry, only to discover that most of the colours have been discontinued in both Anchor and DMC - the difficulty with trying to buy alternatives is that I'm not sure which of the original colours the numbers equate to, so it's hard to work out what the best alternative is - if anyone knows of a website that would show me all the colours as they were and as they are now it would be much appreciated.

Anyway the outcome was I then got lost looking at different other projects that I might enjoy... and was trying to plan for a project I could work on when I'm recovering from surgery next month - I may have distinctly overestimated just how many projects I can get through, particularly given all the projects I already have to hand waiting on completion. So I'm now the slightly guilty feeling owner of another paint by numbers kit and a latch hook rug kit - neither of which I really needed but... no one will notice when I slip them into the pile, right?

Hey, buying things you don’t exactly need is therapeutic!

I have this colour conversion chart but I'm suspecting that that isn't what you are after, if the issue is discontinued.

I have a stash of assorted floss that probably includes at least some DMC - I'd be happy to go look at the numbers on them if you want to list the codes you have.

Oh noes, so bad about the discontinued colours! I have some old Anchor, too, and am going to see if anyone comments about any such website.

Yeah, online shopping is just a huge temptation. So much more selection than in local shops!

Hope your surgery next month goes well

I had a lazy day, which I think I needed because I tweaked something in my back/shoulder area and am having pain. Mom wanted to go to the gym this morning, and I did, but I couldn't do much because of whatever I did to my back. I ended up napping after lunch, too, and since then I've mostly just been sitting, browsing the Internet.

I did cast on 30 stitches and knit a few rows of garter, though. My knitting class starts up again tomorrow and there's two people signed up for it, yay! I know the one - this will be her third set of classes with me. The other I'm not sure who they are, so I am going in prepared to be teaching a brand new beginner. I learned during my first session that starting from the cast-on is NOT a good idea for a new knitter, even though that's how I learned, so I will have them continue on from the garter I knitted.

I told the class organizer that I have some interest in a crochet class, so it sounds like we're going to do that in the spring session. Maybe a combined knitting/crochet class? not sure yet. But I've been browsing tutorials, etc. I would like to have resources to point new crocheters to, and I know there's TONS of videos out there, but I don't know one good central source that I trust like knittinghelp.com - so more searching to do! But I am open to suggestions if anyone knows any good crochet sites (besides PlanetJune.com, which I already plan on linking to).

Oh, no on your back. I hope you have some stretches that help, and that rest and recuperate works.

I'll have a look through my crochet links, but I suspect everything I have is one off links for specific approaches and projects, rather than more comprehensive sites, because I learned to crochet pre-internet.

In the spirit of 'get the dog blanket done by the end of the month' I finished the current edge and turned the corner (giant crochet granny square). I should measure it, and then make a declaration on how big is too big, although I think the end of the month deadline is going to make that decision for me.

The scarf is done!! I made it as long as I am tall; now I have to give it to my friend, and decide which personal project I want to take on now? (I should go on and knit that jumper but I'm a bit scared of fucking it up.)

No crafting today. I had some plans for writing and knitting, but I could barely stay awake and felt miserable all day. I hope it's just stress and I'm not coming down with something.

I can't remember if I shared a picture of the completed back gore of my surcote? It's the nicest one I've done for ages, and now I've finished the side seams and armholes, I'm very nearly finished!
